A Smarter Approach to Energy Efficiency

For students across the area, Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) is where opportunity begins. With more than 100 academic programs and comprehensive student services, RCSJ offers associate degrees for career entry or transfer, short-term career training, community education, and specialized support to help every student achieve their goals.

 

 

The Opportunity

RCSJ had an opportunity to achieve greater efficiency and support long-term sustainability at its Cumberland campus. By modernizing its aging systems, the college could lower energy consumption, reduce operating costs, and enhance comfort.

The Upgrades

Retro-Commissioning Program

The project began with a simple idea: Get more out of the HVAC and building control systems already in place. By updating control programming, replacing sensors, adjusting airflow, optimizing equipment schedules, refining setpoints, and eliminating manual overrides, the college was able to reduce energy waste, improve system performance, and create a more comfortable campus environment—all without major equipment replacements.

The success of the retro-commissioning effort, along with the projected energy savings it uncovered, prompted the college to expand its investment through a larger capital improvement project with our Custom program.

Custom Program

By upgrading building automation controls and implementing advanced optimization strategies, the college enhanced the efficiency of its central heating and cooling system. Campus buildings and the Central Utility Plant now work together to reduce the college’s energy use.
