Vast Distribution Center Takes Stock of Lighting Incentives

A chain of specialty discount stores with most prices set at $5 or less, Five Below has more than 1,600 stores in 43 states. Five hundred of those stores—from Maine to Virginia—are serviced by a distribution center in Pedricktown, N.J., known as ShipCenter NJ. As the highest volume facility in the Five Below distribution system, ShipCenter NJ uses 1 million square feet of space. Needless to say, its lighting demands are extraordinary.

The Opportunity

Faced with the impending end-of-life failure of many of the facility’s bulbs and ballasts, ShipCenter NJ spent months looking for cost-effective lighting upgrade options. The search was unsuccessful until Smart Start Lighting, an Atlantic City Electric Trade Ally, reached out to discuss upgrades and available incentives.

The Upgrades

Smart Start Lighting upgraded every fixture in ShipCenter NJ’s 1-million-square-foot building. All 3,000 fixtures were replaced without any interruption to the facility’s operations. “Smart Start Lighting and their subcontractors worked around our crew members, and it was fairly seamless,” said Malovich.

The Results

In terms of employee relations and aesthetics, ShipCenter NJ noticed a difference immediately. “The building feels more vibrant and alive,” noted Malovich. Plus, these lighting upgrades have made the company more environmentally responsible, reducing its carbon footprint by about 40%.
